Embracing the Teaching Profession

Teaching Profession

The profession of the teacher is unique. As is known, practically in all times of existence of humankind there was a need for teachers. Today, this profession is in demand, perhaps more than ever before. It used to be associated with the school only. In our age, the situation has radically changed. Teachers are becoming more and more needed in the most diverse spheres of our lives.

Many years ago, those who were older automatically became teachers, because of age and life experience. Over time, the profession became more differentiated, and a narrow focus and specialization emerged. So, for example, in the senior classes, each subject is conducted by a separate teacher, which allows the teacher more professionally prepare for the lessons and maximize the material in the educational process.

For example, a teacher of the Nigerian language should not only explain the importance of specific rules and teach them how to express their thoughts either verbally or in writing. But also encourage the student to see the beauty of the language and realize the need for its correct usage in everyday life.

In literature lessons, the teacher will need not only to submit works on the school curriculum but also to form their own opinion about them, reflect on the actions of the heroes, etc. To achieve these goals, pure giving of knowledge is not enough. Today almost any teacher is teaching a professional education as well as moral behavior.

Teaching profession characteristics

1. Accumulating, updating, and structuring of the received knowledge; the development of methodological support, which makes it possible to make the method of their transmission as efficient as possible.

2. Making awareness and realization of students’ social role, helping students to adapt to internal and external conditions as well as certain restrictions imposed by society.

3. Maintaining constant communication with parents to prevent problems, to eliminate their possible negative consequences, to better understand the environment in which the child is raised.

4. Continuing professional development through self-education.

5. Making operational decisions related to the educational component of the studying process. Particular attention is paid to the development of a system for motivating students, actively involving them in participation in out-of-class work, talent, and skill competitions.

6.      Making compliance with the standards of conduct established by the "corporate code" of a particular school, college, or university.

Teaching Responsibility

Even at the beginning of the emergence of the profession of a teacher in Nigeria, it was a prestigious and respected post. It was the teachers who were engaged not only in the education of a child but also in the teaching of the moral and ethical qualities of society.

Most parents themselves asked that the teacher, in addition to knowledge, initiate children into responsibility and discipline. If previously teachers could physically influence the child to discipline him/her, now the use of force has become unacceptable.

If the teacher crosses this line and the child's parents leave a complaint against him, then they can quickly sack him. The teacher's education in Nigeria is a somewhat tricky and thorny path. The level of education in primary schools is falling, and respect for the teacher leaves much to be desired. Though society understands the importance of this profession, that does not play any role either for the teachers themselves or their salaries.

The contribution of the teacher to the level and quality of education in Nigeria is very large. It is the teachers that determine the set of skills and the list of knowledge that each student should receive. Students themselves adopt important qualities of the teacher and apply them in the future. Thus, it is the professionalism of each teacher that is the most important quality that affects the development of society as a whole.

Professional Bodies

Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) is an agency of the Federal Ministry of Education of Nigeria. It was established by the TRCN Decree N0. 31 of 1993 (now TRCN Act CAP T3 of 2004). The major mandates are the regulation and control of the Teaching Profession at all levels of the Nigerian Education system, both in the public and private sectors

Nigeria Teachers who have Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) Certificate are now like their professional counterparts that belong to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Registered Nurse (RN), Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), etc.

To belong to any of these bodies, members will have to register and be inducted. Membership licenses are renewed periodically so as to help the member practice.

In Conclusion

The fundamental job of teaching is no longer to distribute facts but to help children learn how to use them by developing their abilities to think critically.
